"The rise in carbon emissions and the resulting global warming impact, have moved energy efficiency further up the political agenda than perhaps has been seen in a generation. Companies are now very aware of the environmental impact and are trying to address these issues through coporate social reponsibility policies. The UK government is now following the lead set by the EU in the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which will become law by 2009. In essence, EVERY building will have an energy certificate such as A, B, or C in the same way that a dishwasher has at present.

The consumer will then be in a position to make an informed choice about the relative merits or otherwise of a building’s energy performance. This will change the building landscape indeed and building owners will need to be aware that a new, well-informed client, is waiting just around the next corner. Who will want a building with an Energy Rating of ‘C’, when they can have an ‘A’? Building services engineers and contractors will have a vital and pivotal role in addressing these issues in the coming years."
